Nick smiley vs Joe Johnson Heavyweight

Nick probes with a double jab and they go back to sizing each other up. Johnson jabs to no effect. Fighters stand and trade some slow shots but nothing lands. Nick connects with a great leg kick that staggers Johnson. Johnson recovers. nick tries another kick that is caught and Johnson gets a takedown. Johnson’s stands over Nick and delivers some gnp after which Nick is able to stand. nick has some success with bull rushing strikes but falls after he connects with a big knee to the head. Johnson comes down over nick but is unable to pass or do any damage. Ref stands them after a minute or so of inactivity. Nick lands a single solid right and follows with another knee. Johnson staggers and takes a few big shots before the ref calls a close to the action. Nick Smiley dominates this fight.

Nick Smiley def Joe Johnson by TKO in Rd. 1 4:33

Angelica Brotherton vs Tiffany Connell 115lbs

Angelica shoots and gets a single early on, Tiffany tries to work a guillotine but Angelica is able to secure the single and they get to the ground. Angelica works in half guard and Tiffany continues to hold the guillotine. Tiffany is able to sweep with the guillotine hold and gets on top in Angelica’s half guard. Angelica is able to stand and they trade blows in the clinch. Tiffany secures a standing guillotine and tries to finish but Angelica escapes. The ladies work heel strikes, foot stomps, and body blows in the clinch and are constantly working. Angelica is able to get a superior position and secure a guillotine and quickly drops into her guard. Tiffany escapes, Angelica tries to secure a quick armbar but misses and the round ends.
Round 1 Angelica tries a leading left hook to close the distance and they clinch again. Angelica secures a takedown and works from top position. After some time, Tiffany is able to sweep and do the same from the top. Angelica attempts an armbar and nearly completes when Tiffany escapes and stands. They clinch up again and Angelica scores another trip to land in Tiffany’s half guard. Angelica passes Tiffany’s guard and works in the mount until she is able to soften up an arm and secure an armbar literally 1 second before time is called. The crowd is on fire.

Terry Blackburn vs Imani Lee Heavyweight

Terry is trying to keep range with leg kicks and jabs. Imani is physically imposing gut not connecting with much to start. Terry closes the distance and Imani shows his strength. Terry backs out of the clinch and attacks from range. Terry closes to clinch range again after some strikes and takes some knees from Imani for his trouble. He needs to not be at this range. They split and strike from range with leg kicks. Terry closes again and connects with a high kick. They work on the inside for a second and Imani is hit with a low blow. after the rest he’s due, Imani come out to drop bombs. Imani connects with big shots from both hands and looks to have Terry hurt. Terry is bleeding from the mouth but maintains the aggression and pushes Imani to the cage where they clinch. After some inactivity the ref separates them and Terry launches an overhand right that misses. Imani connects with some more big rights and knees in the clinch. They finish the round in the clinch.

Round 2 Terry is still the aggressor and tries a 1-2 combo. Terry clinches up again and works some dirty boxing. Imani delivers an errant low blow and Terry take a minute. After the rest both fighters exchange looping strikes and Terry pushes Imani back into the fence. Terry is expending a lot of energy pushing a very big Imani Lee against the cage and Imani is able to separate and deliver strikes occasionally. Terry just pushes right back into him and strikes in the inside. After being separated they go back to trading big looping strikes and Terry pushes Imani right back to the fence. This rounds ends exactly like the first.

Beginning of the round Imani lands a strike and Terry goes right back to pushing Imani into the fence. Imani is a big guy and separates easily. I wonder if he’s not just letting Terry gas for the 2 rounds and going to finish him here in the 3rd. As I type it Imani pushes Terry off and delivers a series of strikes. Terry has a strong chin and weathers the storm. Imani seems to have gasses himself and Terry pushes him back to the fence. The ref separates them and they go back to big strikes in the middle of the ring. Imani moves back and Terry rushes him right to the fence. The ref separates them again and, you guessed it, they trade some and go right back to clinching. The round ends in the clinch.

This is an interesting case of aggression and ring control vs effective striking and damage. I think Imani put a hurting on Terry but it looked like Terry controlled the fight all the way through. Let’s see what the judges say.

Imani Lee def Terry Blackburn by split decision.

Jamie Harrison vs Aaron Conway 165lbs

Touch gloves and they trade some jabs. Jamie fires one low and hits Aaron with an overhand right. Jamie gets a double and they go to the ground. Jamie works some gnp from the top in Aaron’s guard. Jamie has been unable to pass. Aaron gets under hooks and stands. They clinch against the cage and Aaron is able to land a solid knee and work punches to the head from north south. Aaron pushes Jamie around to the ground in half guard. But Jamie gets to standing. Just as he gets up Aaron delivers a solid knee that drops Jamie and they call the fight.

Aaron Conway def Jamie Harrison by TKO in Rd. 1 3:05

Jahmal McLennan vs Ron Jacobs

Ron leads with some strikes that Jahmal sidesteps and the clinch against the cage Jahmal single leg slams Ron but Ron stands right up. Ron gets Jahmal to the ground on his back and they grapple for a moment. Ron is in half guard and looks to work for a kimura that misses and Jahmal is able to sweep to get top position in Ron’s guard. Ron attempts a triangle when Jahmal pulls his arm out, Ron changes to an omaplata and Jahmal picks him up and slams him. Jahmal stays cautious and works in Ron’s guard with some strikes. Ron is very active in the guard and attempts a number of submissions. Jahmal stays safe and the round ends.

Round 2 Jahmal does a great job picking apart Ron in the standup with jab and leg kick combos. Ron commits to a takedown and works for a submission in half guard. Jahmal defends and they get to standing where Jamal goes back to striking well. Ron shoots a double and knocks himself out seemingly when he hits Jahmal. Jahmal lands on top in Ron’s guard and Jahmal is able to work some GnP there. Jahmal is able to posture up and deliver punches and elbows with Ron’s head wedged into the cage. The round ends soon after.

Round 3 Jahmal sits back and tries to pick Ron apart the same way he did in the first round. A missed right hook let’s Ron get a double and go to the ground. Ron lands in side control and works to pass getting the mount. Jahmal bucks, separates, and is able to get Ron off. Ron jumps right back on in half guard but is unable to progress. Jahmal gets to standing and throws some more effective combos. Ron catches a leg and turns it into a double and they go to the ground. Ron is unable to pass or do damage and Jahmal is able to stand and deliver more damage on the feet until the fight ends.

Jahmal McLennan def Ron Jacobs by unan. decision.

Daniel Rafuse vs Lenny Mitchell

Daniel gets it to the ground and mounts Lenny rather quickly. Daniel manages to deliver some strikes and nearly attempt a submission when Lenny is able to reverse and get in Daniel’s guard and deliver some trikes from the guard. Daniel and Lenny exchange some strikes in the middle of the ring but no real damage is done. Lenny lands some solid jabs Daniel goes in for a takedown. Lenny catches Daniel with some quick hooks and drops him with an elbow. Lenny wins by KO.

Lenny Mitchell def Daniel Rafuse by KO Rd. 1 4:00

Charles Blanchard vs David Hulett

Charles shoots and they go to the ground. Charles is in David’s half guard and delivers some punches and elbows to soften him up. Charles is able to pass momentarily but David reestablishes half guard and then full guard. Charles passes to half guard again and is content with delivering some punishment from this position. Lots of elbows and punches have opened a significant cut over David’s right eye. David tries to maneuver out of the position he’s in but is unable to escape Charles’s dominance.

David is unable to continue due to the cut.

Charles Blanchard def Daniel Rafuse by TKO (stoppage due to cut) at the end of Rd. 1

Delson Heleno vs Waachiim SpiritWolf

After a tentative start and some traded missed strikes Delson is able to clinch up with SpiritWolf and they go to the ground. Delson works from half guard with some strikes and tries to improve position. Delson gets SpiritWolf in a arm triangle against the cage that he is unable to complete and they get back to the ground. SpiritWolf is able to stand finally and get Delson against the cage, Delson reverses and pushes SpiritWolf back to the other side of the cage and to the ground. After a good body knee from Delson, the round ends.

Round 2 is just as tentative to start and Delson is able to land a solid leg kick. SpiritWolf looks slow to put anything together. They trade some shots before Delson lands a good 1-2 punch and go in for a single leg takedown. Delson completes his takedown but SpiritWolf is able to wall walk back up to standing and they go back into a tentative standoff. Delson manages to complete the 2nd takedown in the round and they end there with Delson in SpiritWolf’s guard.

Round 3 they trade a few leg kicks with no real damage delivered. SpiritWolf delivers a 1-2 punch that Delson is able to evade and turn into a body lock, eventually securing the takedown. Delson lands in SpritWolf’s half guard and they stay there for the rest of the round before Delson tries to steal it with some big punches to close the fight.

Delson Heleno def Waachiim SpiritWolf by unan. decision.

NEXTMMAFIGHTER FACEBOOK

The following is our round by round recap of the action from Art of Fighting 7.

155lbs Patrick Cenobole vs. Troy Gerhart

Round 1 begins with Gerhart initiating a double leg takedown which lands him in Cenobole’s half guard. Cenebole sweeps and is able to get back to his feet. Still insistant on scoring takedowns, Gerhart tries again but Cenoble sprawls. Gerhart is able to land another takedown, this time scoring with some ground and pound. Gerhart takedown from behind into half guard. Some more groundwork takes place as both fighters look for position as the round ends.

Round 2 begins and Cenobole rocks Gerhart on the feet. Gerhart goes into Auto Pilot and scores a take down and lands in side control on Cenobole. Gerhart lands some more shots before Cenobole reverses and rocks Gerhart with a flurry of punches. Cenobole stands back up while Gerhart is trying to figure out where he is. Cenobole takes potshots on the ground as Gerhart turtles and the referee stops the fight as Gerhart is failing to defend himself.

Cenobole wins by TKO @ 3:12 of R2

155lbs Tony Huertas vs. Paul Barrow

The fight begins and Huertas scores a big takedown on Barrow. Barrow immediately works towards and armbar and quickly sinks it in as Huertas tries to posture up and drop Barrow. Barrow holds on even in an verticle position and Huertas crumbles to the ground as he taps out due to the armbar.

Barrow wins by submission (armbar) @ :59 of R1

115lbs Tiffany Connell vs. Catia Vitoria

As the fight begins both fighters are looking to strike with Connell getting the best of the exchanges. Vitoria lands a take down and works from halfguard on Connell. Connell is able to get back to her feet as both fighters are through some big leg kicks. Taking a number of punches in the beak, Vitoria ends the round with a bloody nose.

Round 2 begins with a big take down from Vitoria where she works a guillotine but Connell is able to escape. From here Vitoria is able to transition to side control and then the Crucifix position, landing some big hammerfists on the side of Connell’s head. Vitoria is clearly controlling the fight on the ground before it once again goes back to the feet where both fighters are throwing big combos with Vitoria landing some front kicks to the face of COnnell.

Round 3 is spent entirely on the feet with Vitoria getting the better end of the exchanges. Both fighters left it out here and it is going to the cards as a strong candidate for Fight of the Night.

Vitoria wins by split decision

170lbs Daniel Lovett vs. Raul Amaya

The fight starts and Amaya is trying to hard to get a takedown which he eventually finishes. Amaya lands in full guard as Lovett is working for a triangle from the bottom. The triangle isnt able to contain Amaya who wants badly to posture up. Lovett finds mission control and gets a good hold of Amaya with his rubber guard as Amaya looks to move towards mount. Amaya breaks free of Lovett’s rubber guard and begins to rains blows. Lovett is able to manuevar towards an armbar but then quickly transitions to an omoplatta. He gets super close to finishing as Amays arm is badly bent back. The round runs out with Lovett nearly finishing.

Round two picks up where Round 1 ended. Amaya quickly lands a takedown and lovett controls him with the rubber guard. Lovett is able to sweep Amaya and land in his halfguard but Amaya flips him over and takes his back. As Lovett gets Amaya to his guard, Amaya postures up and is raining down blows. Lovett grabs ahold of Amaya and squeezes hard to no avail as the round ends.

As Round 3 begins Amaya charges forward and finishes a big takedown, landing in side control on Lovett. Amaya is able to transition to Lovett’s back and finishes the fight by RNC.

Amaya wins by submission (RNC) @ 1:00 of R3

145lbs Ron Jacobs vs. Jim Alers

The fight begins and Jacobs is looking to get out of here early. He is throwing bombs and giving Alers everything he has. He clips Alers rocking him for a moment and then uses that opportunity to quickly finish the fight by strikes.

Jacobs wins by TKO @ :24 of R1

185lbs Mark Serkez vs. Keith McCabe

The fight begins with both fighters feeling each other out on the feet. Serkez looking for a big finish with the right handed whammer homerun. Both fighters are throwing shots with Serkez even trying a spinning heel kick. McCabe throws a big headkick that Serkez checks. McCabe follows through with a big hip toss that brings the round to a close.

The second round begins and both fighters are looking to point on some combos. Serkez looks to advance but is met with a stif jab from McCabe which causes Serkez to take McCabe down, landing in side control. Serkez postures up and is landing some glancing elbows from the side that he is sliding on McCabes face. This position continues as Serkez continues to point by striking the side of the head with elbows and drilling Mc Cabe in the guts. Serkez moves to mount, postures up to deliver blows but McCabe sweeps and finishes out the round in the guard of Serkez.

The final rounds begins with both fighters looking to score the big one on the feet. Serkez catches a big leg kick from McCabe and uses it to take him down. As they fall, McCabe grabs the neck of Serkez and squeezes hard for a guillotine attempt. Serkez is able to escape to side control on McCabe, once again drilling him with elbows to the head and punches to the guts. They wrestle around for a bit but Serkez is unable to advance so the ref stands them up. Mc Cabe throws a huge headkick that serkez checks to end a great fight.

Serkez wins by unanimous decision

205lbs Robert Turner vs. Arthur Cesar

The fight begins in what is a classic matchup of striker vs. grappler. Turner comes out throwing big bombs trying to catch Cesar but is unsuccessful. Cesar is patient as he avoids Turner’s barrage, just waiting for his chance to take the fight to the ground. Cesar gets in position on Turner and is landing big shots from the guard as Turner holds on. Cesar is able to transition to side control and delivers some more strikes to end the round.

Round 2 begins and Turner lands a big shot that stuns Cesar, knocking him to the ground. Turner follows him to the ground and mounts but Cesar sweeps and does a fantastic transition into a knee- bar. Turner tries to roll out but Cesar has it tight and Turner taps out.

Cesar wins by submission (knee-bar) @ 1:02 of R2

155lbs Edson Berto vs. Greg Loughran

The fight starts and Loughran lands a takedown on Berto. Berto quickly realizes that Loughran is playing into his gameplan to battle on the ground. Loughran starts to deliver some shots from the top, but Berto grabs his foot and locks in a lightning fast heel hook as he leans back. Loughran quickly taps out ending this fight early in the first round

Berto wins by submission (heel hook) @ 2:05 of R1

Heavyweight Tom Sauer vs. Liron Wilson

Round 1 begins with both fighters throwing heavy punches and meaty kicks. Sauer goes for a big kick and slips as Wilson takes the opportunity to follow him to the ground. Wilson lands in fullguard and Sauer takes the opportunity to grab and arm and look for an Armbar. While posturing up, Wilson takes some heel kicks to the dome. Sauer continues to try submissions from the ground even attempting an inverted triangle which is an insane move for a heavyweight. Wilson is raining down some blows as Sauer gives up his back. After the RNC by Wilson is unsuccessful, Sauer is able to sweep and tries to finish Wilson by RNC as he holds a tight body triangle, ending the round.

As the round begins, both fighters look visibly gassed. Sauer catches a leg kick, follows Wilson to the ground and punishes him with ground and pound from the top. Wilson takes some shots and tries to evade but it isn’t long before he turtles up and stops defending himself. The referee intervenes and ends the fight early in round 2.

Sauer wins by TKO @ :54 of R2

Super Heavyweight Imani Lee vs. Geovanni Sarran

The fight begins and these are two huge dudes going to battle. Sarran is looking for an opportunity to take down Lee while Lee throws a big leg lick. Sarran waits for his change and is able to take Lee down, landing on his back. He works towards trying to apply an RNC when Lee stands up with Sarran on his back. It isn’t long before 600lbs of Beef comes crashing to the canvas. Unbelievably through all of this, Sarran is able to hold onto the forearm choke and sinks it in more once they come crashing down. Sarran takes the bout as the referee steps in once he sees Lee’s tapout.

Sarran wins by submission (RNC) @ 2:04 of R1

Heavyweight David Yost vs. Marcio Cruz

The main event is underway and both fighters are sizing each other up, throwing some light combinations. They engage while Cruz is against the cage and he looks to pull guard on Yost. Yost stays on his feet and works in a few uppercuts from the clinch as Cruz tries to muscle the fight to the grouns. Eventually Cruz puts all of his weight on Yost and he pulls guard. From there the jiu-jitsu specialist Cruz doesn’t take long to take Yost’s back. Yost delivers a few punches back to Cruz as he tries to fight him off, but its not enough as Cruz sinks in the RNC and flattens Yost out.

Cruz wins by submission @ 1:22 in R1

That’s it for us from Tampa, FL. Thanks again to Art of Fighting for putting on a great show!

Featured Fighter Interview | Gracie Barra St. Petersburg| David Yost

March 31st, 2010 No comments

David “Pay Me” Yost is an explosive heavyweight who will be headlining Art of Fighting 7 this Saturday in Tampa Bay, FL. We took some time with him as he gets ready for the biggest fight of his young career.

NextMMAFighter : Thanks for taking to time to talk with us David, how are your final preparations coming along.

David Yost : It couldn’t be better, im in best shape of my life and the fans are going to see a new fighter in there.

NextMMAFighter : You have spent most of your professional career with Art of Fighting, tell us about your matchup on Saturday night at the Sun Dome.

David Yost : I’ll be fighting six time world jiu-jitsu champion Marcio Cruz for the world heavyweight belt on Saturday night. Cruz is a force to be reckoned with on the ground, but all fights start standing, so ill start with the upper hand in my opinion.

NextMMAFighter : You’re fighting in the Main event at a big arena, does any of this pressure get to you?

David Yost : Not at all. Ive been fighting my whole life and this is just another guy I gotta beat to be the best.

NextMMAFighter : As a highly touted prospect you only have 1 loss on your record due to injury. Tell us what happened and what you learned from the experience.

David Yost : When I received my first loss, I hip tossed a guy and we landed awkwardly. I tore my shoulder out of socket and didn’t realize what happened, so I continued to fight for 4 and a half minutes. When the round had ended, the doctor called and end to the fight. From this fight I learned you cant really train for injuries, they just happen sometimes and its up to you to get back on that horse.

NextMMAFighter : You have only had 1 fight come out of the first round in your career how do you prepare to be explosive yet make sure you have enough if the fight goes into the later rounds?

David Yost : I’ve been training for 5×5 min rounds and the fight is only three, so I plan to be explosive for the entire fight.

NextMMAFighter : You are fighting Marcio Cruz, who holds a win over Frank Mir in the UFC. Does the experience of your opponent play into your preparation at all?

David Yost : It certainly does a little, but I’m a totally different fighter than Mir so Marcio will have to adjust to me more than I will to him.

NextMMAFighter : Without giving away your gameplan how do you see the fight playing out on Saturday night.

David Yost : Just like every fight, I’m going to punch him till either he quits or the ref makes me stop hitting him. :)

NextMMAFighter : Although AOF is a great organization, if you keep racking up KO wins the bigger promotions will surely come calling. What are you plans for your future as a Professional fighter?

David Yost : My plans are to stick with the people that have always been there for me and follow my heart. No matter what, I cant go wrong with that plan.

NextMMAFighter : As you might very well be fighting these guys somewhere down the line, break down the Carwin / Lesnar matchup from a fan perspective for us.

David Yost : I see Carwin coming out strong and confident with his hands. Lesnar will surely try to go to the ground and tie him up right from the beginning. Power and Strength will be a big factor in this fight, but I think Carwin will win in the end.

NextMMAFighter : Thanks again for the interview and we wish you luck on Saturday night, in closing is there anyone you would like to thank?

David Yost : I want to thank all my sponsors that make fighting possible for me. Steinberg, Sterns, Cruz Platinum Wrench, Full Tilt Poker and last but not least my friends/family for all the support they have given me.

Tickets are still available for Art of Fighting 7 “Payday” on Saturday night and you can purchase them HERE.
