Featured Gym | Mjölnir in Reykjavik, Iceland

June 23rd, 2010 oscar No comments

My day job requires me to travel some and this time it was to Reykjavik, Iceland. The day was a drizzly 58 degrees farenheit and the sun is out 20, or so, of the 24 hours of the day. I was able to drop by Mjölnir and connect with Gunnar Nelson, the Icelandic phenom that’s 6-0-1 in MMA and multiple first place finishes in BJJ tournaments at weight and open-weight anywhere from Iceland to New York.

I was hoping to take a BJJ or boxing class, since that has been most of my experience training in MMA. The only class offered that day was an MMA class led by Gunnar himself. Exactly what I was looking for.

The class was not unlike my BJJ classes so I was prepared for most of what I was dealing with. We did 15 minutes of warm-up, followed by 15 minutes of light rolling. It was a small class and conducted entirely in Icelandic. The guys were well versed in no-gi and I was having a lot of trouble with position. Really, really tough guys and I had to try really hard to keep up. The language barrier wasn’t much of an issue until we started the technique portion. The rest of the class was focused on some single-leg takedown techniques and I was able to follow most of what Gunnar was teaching by paying attention to his movement and grips. There were some specifics I wanted clarified and he was happy to describe it in English. Everyone in Iceland speaks perfect English but most are comfortable speaking their native tongue, obviously. I’ve had a lot of exposure to Icelandic so I didn’t mind. FYI, “single leg” sounds really similar in Icelandic and English. Not really hard to follow.

Gunnar was nice enough to take the time to talk to me for a minute and show us a Rear Naked Choke.

Tim “MOAB” Stout on his fight with Jason “Mayhem” Miller at Strikeforce on CBS 2

April 12th, 2010 oscar No comments

Next MMA Fighter: When did you get the call from Strikeforce to fight Jason “Mayhem” Miller?
Tim Stout: I got the call right at 2 weeks out and agreed immediately, obviously it’s a really big fight for me.

Next MMA Fighter: How do you feel about fighting on CBS?
Tim Stout: I’m really looking forward to it. It gives my family, friends, and fans an opportunity to see me fight when they may not have been able to in the past.

Next MMA Fighter: How do you want to fight him? What’s the gameplan?
Tim Stout: My gameplan is no secret. I’m gonna try to keep it standing and knock him out. I train with Mark Cook for my kickboxing and Roberto Traven on the ground, I’m prepared for anything he brings.

Next MMA Fighter: There’s no shortage of tape for this guy, you do your homework?
Tim Stout: I’m a big fan, actually. I enjoy the show and the shenanigans. In a lot of ways he’s my exact opposite, so I just like to watch it.

Next MMA Fighter: No plans to rival his walk-in?
Tim Stout: (laughs) No, I’m just gonna walk in there and want to get to work. I’ll leave the show for the showman.

Next MMA Fighter: Is Strikeforce a promotion you see yourself in for the long term or is UFC a goal, perhaps?
Tim Stout: I’ll fight anywhere that will have me and treat me the best. Fighting on National TV is the big game, so it’s just about where I can be happiest.

Next MMA Fighter: The Hendo Shields fight is coming up. Any predictions?
Tim Stout: I love Dan Henderson, he’s a good ol’ boy just like me and he comes to fight. Jake won’t likely be able to take him down and it’ll turn into a boxing match. Jake will run into Dan’s right hand eventually.

Next MMA Fighter: UFC 112 is just about underway, any comments or predictions about those fights?

Tim Stout: I’d like to see Maia win, I think it would be interesting for the division. BJ Penn is great and I don’t really see him losing, and I have a lot of respect for Renzo, I’d like him to come away with a win there.

Next MMA Fighter: We’re not too far from the fight now, how’s your weight?
Tim Stout: I’m going up a weight class so I feel really good, I’ll put on some pounds and do a really small cut. I feel incredible and won’t have issues with cardio or hydration that would usually come with a big cut.

Next MMA Fighter: How do you feel about Georgia fighters compared to the rest of the scene? You’ve got a big fight coming up, Tex Johnson is gonna fight War Machine next weekend, Raphael Assuncao is fighting for the WEC…
Tim Stout: I don’t think Georgia fighters are necessarily better than anywhere else, there’s a big mix of talent in the state. Although there are guys like Tex, Assuncao, and Jucao that really shine.

Next MMA Fighter: Tell us about your nickname.
Tim Stout: My first couple of fights I finished by KOs all in the first couple seconds of the first round. I developed a reputation for being a tenacious and explosive fighter. People wanted me to be the “Pitbull” and other stuff but when it came down to it, I wanted to be original. MOAB stands for Massive Ordinance Air Blast, the most powerful non-nuclear bomb our military uses. I picked it because it was original and I throw bombs in all of my fights.

Next MMA Fighter: Thanks for speaking with us, Tim. Anyone you want to thank?
Tim Stout: I would like to thank all my sponsors Hitman Fight Gear, Full Tilt Poker.net and Fighter Warehouse. I also want to thank Nutraplanet.com and Ink Revolutions who have supported me since I started fighting.

I owe a huge debt of gratitude to my training partners at Unit 2 Fitness and Roberto Traven, Mark Cook from Cook’s Impact Martial Arts, Casey Oxendine from Team Oxendine and all the guys at Toe 2 Toe Fitness in Hiram.

Lastly I would like to thank Sponsored Fan for all the work they do for me. These guys never stop working for me and it shows, just look at all my new sponsors!

Main Event Winner Jesse Grissom working for an armbar

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a night of Muay Thai and MMA from Chattanooga, TN for Chattanooga Extreme Fight Night IV at the Camp Jordan Arena. The crowd is packed and lights are bright. We are ready for some action.

David Jackson vs Austin Sucher – Bantamweight –MMA

Austin chooses not to touch gloves and we get started. They trade some punches and kicks with no real damage inflicted when Austin scores a knockdown with a push kick. He stands quickly and David returns the favor with a straight right that knocks Austin down. David pounces immediately eating an upkick or two on the way in that sets up a triangle. Austin transitions to an armbar and works to sink it in for a few seconds while David defends with a lot of heart. Austin transitions back into a triangle and has it deep.

Austin Sucher def David Jackson by sub. (triangle) in rd. 1

D’Angelo Bynum vs Derrick Hubbard – Flyweight – MMA

Bynum tags Hubbard with a head kick that momentarily stuns Hubbard. Bynum follows up with some combos but Hubbard clunches. Bynum picks him up and slams him into side control. Bynum is unable to secure a sub and gets up. Hubbard comes in to clinch again but is taken down easily by Bynum. Bynum passes to mount immediately and punishes with blows when Hubbard gives up his back. Bynum attacks the wantonly attacks the neck, giving up his hooks, but secures the rear naked for the win.

Tony Lester vs Pat Krell – Welterweight – Muay Thai

Tony immediately lands left right combo that puts Pat on his butt. He survives the count and eats a headkick and to two other shots. Pat is having trouble mounting an offense while Tony just picks him apart on every angle and technique. Tony lands a number of big body shots and Pat shows it. Tony lands 2 devastating leg kicks and a handful of strong punches that eventually drop Pat. Pat does not survive the count this time.

Tony Lester def Pat Krell by KO in rd. 1

After some feeler shots the two clinch up and TJ looks to go to the ground Josh throws some knees in the clinch and gets off the cage. TJ goes for a guillotine but is unable to secure it tightly before he goes to the ground. Josh is able to move around to side control but before he mounts an offense TJ sweeps and gets the mount. TJ drops some punches in Josh’s guard. After some inactivity they are stood up. TJ comes in with a combo that hits the head and body. Josh returns with some strikes and a double that misses but lands him in a clinch where he delivers brutal knees. Josh disengages and throws 2 haymakers that both land and drop TJ. Josh gets a few more shots in before the ref is able to pull him off.

Josh Jarvis def TJ Harris by KO in rd. 1

Stephanie Stafford vs Erica Taylor – Welterweight – Low Kick rules kickboxing

This is hard. There is so much happening right now I’m barely able to describe it. The ref actually separates them from continuous ineffectual striking. No clinch or hug, they just aren’t doing anything on the inside and need to get separated. It just happened again. The ladies are both landing strikes of every kind, both hands and low kicks with both legs as per the rules. Stafford is favoring a 1-2 punch combo and following up with leg kicks while Taylor throws a lot of body kicks. Looks like a pretty even round.

Second round, Stafford seems to be weathering the blows better and landing some good leg kicks as before. Stafford also appears to have the superior cardio definitely the more resilient fighter. Taylor lands a few quick jabs but is still losing the fight.

Last round, Stafford goes back to her formula of straight lefts and rights with leg kicks. She is an unstoppable barrage of strikes and Taylor not only loses in the exchanges but can’t keep up with the pace.
This fight was ruled a draw.

Nicholas Wesley vs Tim Boyle – Welterweight – MMA

Nick comes out with some quick kicks to the head and body. Nick follows up with a double leg takedown and immediately passes to mount. Nick rains blows down from the top. Tim moves Nick up really high on his mount and is able to sweep. Tim ends in one of Nick’s triangle attempts and eats some elbows there. Tim escapes and they scramble where Tim gets the upper hand and over Nick in the turtle position. Tim moves to put a hook in Nick rolls forward where Tim is able to take his back for a moment. Nick explodes out and after the scramble catches Tim’s throat and takes the back for the RNC.

Nichols Wesley def Tim Boyle by sub (RNC) in rd. 1

Aundra Evans vs Jerico Lathem – Light Heavyweight – MMA

Aundra comes out with a couple shots and gets a body lock then tries to trip. Jerico rolls him over and gets the mount quickly. Aundra is holding him down to keep from taking damage. Jerico postures up for some shots but is careful to maintain his position. Jerico is smothering with the shoulders but not looking for more than that when Aundra is able to stand up finally. They stand up and clinch quickly. They both try for some knees but are unable to land anything significant when Jerico gets another takedown and lands some shots in the schoolyard hold.

Round 2 Aundra is wary of the takedown and keeping his distance with kicks and punches. Jerico is also apt for the striking game and throws some big rights with bad intention. Aundra is able to stun Jerico once and gets a few extra punches in when Jerico puts his hands up to defend. Jerico gets to a clinch but can’t score anything and they are separated. Aundra lands some more stunning shots and Jerico covers up. Aundra punishes as much as he can but they both gas. Aundra goes for a body lock and drags Jerico to the ground. Aundra is in side control but is too tired to improve position.

Round 3 Jerico looks tired and covers up when Aundra comes with anything. Aundra tries to penetrate the defense but Jerico stays standing and throws a punch or two from behind cover. Aundra pushes Jerico down for a guillotine attempt but his finish is lazy and Jerico is able to move to side control. Jerico taps his reserves and reigns down blows to the head. He hits the back of the head a little too much and he gets a warning. Jerico finally listens to his corner and throws a few leg kicks. Jerico feints a kick and throws an overhand right to some effect. These guys slug it out till the last seconds with the last bits of energy they have.

Jerico Lathem def Aundra Evans by split decision at the end of rd. 3

Lee Cain vs Spencer Manning – Bantamweight – Low Kick rules kickboxing

Lee is the more active fighter throwing lots of probing jabs and leg kicks. Spencer looks to take his time and load up on his shots. The blows landed remain about the same so far though. Spencer fins a strong string of combos and jars Lee but good. Spencer moves to a mostly counter posture and is having some success.
Round 2 Spencer initiates some of the contact this time and uses double jabs and leg kicks to close distance. Lee is just late to the party in some of these exchanges. Spencer found a rhythm and distance that works for his striking game and Lee is just a half step behind.
Round 3 Lee stalks Spencer with some body kicks. Spencer seems to be biding his time and unleshes some strong left hands that land. A third lands by way of a superman punch and a fourth followed by a body kick. Spencer lands a push kick that lands at Lee’s liver and hurts him. Spencer follows up with a left hook to the body. Spence then feints to the body and throws another superman left. Spencer goes back to the body and lands 2 good shots that leaves Lee wincing and turning away. Lee wants no more and the ref stops the fight.

Spencer Manning def Lee Cain by TKO in rd. 3

Nathan Lindsay vs Travis Ford – Flyweight – MMA

Nathan is a small 18 yr old kid but comes out swinging. Lots of jabs and combos but Travis lands a few jabs first. Travis proves must stronger and is able to shake Nathan’s takedowns. Travis gets a mount after his own takedown but Nathan is able to shake out of it. On the feet Nathan was able to land a right hand but Travis came back with his own. Travis follows up and gets Nathan to the ground. Travis rains down blows from top position but is unable to finish.
Round 2 Nathan throws a headkick that misses and continues to press the action. Travis comes at him lands a glancing head kick when Nathan drops to get a takedown. Travis dominates the ground game being the stronger fighter. Nathan is able to get out and over Travis but is rolled right back over and Travis goes for something between a neck crank and an arm triangle. He expends a lot of energy here and Nathan squirms out and over Travis. Nathan is able to pin Travis’s arm and head between his legs and throws punch after punch. Travis is unable to defend in this position and after 15 seconds of abuse the ref puts a stop to it.

Nathan Lindsay def Travis Ford by TKO in rd. 2

Russell Benes vs Monty Beavers – Lightweight – MMA

Monty just misses with a big head kick and Monty picks him up an for a running slam into side control. Monty delivers some knees from there. Monty got to mount but Russell was able to escape and stand. Russell wend for a leg kick and Monty countered with a strong right. Monty closed for a guillotine attempt but was unsuccessful. Monty approaches with some punches, kicks, and ends with a double leg and back inside control. Month is able to dictate most of the ground game until Russell gets a sweep and delivers some punches from top position until the time runs out.

Round 2 Monty throws a lazy jump kick and Russell maintains his distance. Russell uses jabs and leg kicks but is ultimately taken down again. Monty works for a guillotine with Russell pressed against the fence. Monty abandons that and works from half guard. He is unable to advance and they’re stood up. Monty feints a takedown and throws a big right that lands flush. Monty comes in for the takedown again and the round expires.

This round Monty tries the feint takedown and overhand again but falls when he follows through. He stands and shoots a lazy double that still gets the takedown. Monty is able to pass to mount but unable to do anything with it. Russell sweeps and gets in Monty’s guard. After more inactivity the ref stands them up. Monty uses the rest of the round for more takedowns and the time expires once again.

Monty Beavers def Russell Benes by unan. Decision at the end of rd 3

Adrienne Simmons vs Lashanda Williams – Light Heavyweight – Muay Thai

Simmons is using mostly leg kicks to keep range, being the taller fighter. Williams likes to stay inside and throw punches. Williams is getting clinched when she gets in close and takes a few knees for it. The key to victory for Williams looks to be to stick and move with combos.

The 2nd round progresses much the same way the first did. It still looks like Williams is getting the better of the exchanges but Simmons is certainly fighting a technical battle.

3rd round Simmons comes out with a strong push kick and 2 leg kicks. She also starts using her jab more to keep that range. Williams pops up with an overhand right and then another. Once she stuns Simmons she is able to create a1-2 combo that does some good damage. Simmons favors the clinch when the action gets close but hasn’t landed a solid knee yet. Williams finished the round strong with a good combo.

Lashanda Williams def Adrienne Simmons

Josh was able to escape and scramble into Jesse’s guard. Jesse swept soon after passed to mount. Jesse is able to deliver significant punishment from top position here. Josh is having a hard time getting out of the mount. Josh attempted 2 different armbars in the waning moments of the round almost ending the fight but Jesse was able to escape.

Round 2 Josh tried for a headkick that missed and Jesse was able to wrap him up and take him to the ground. Josh was able to work back to guard but Jesse continued to work and pass until he got to the mount again. From the mount Jesse lands some punches when suddenly Josh bridges and is able to buck Jesse over into his guard. Jesse works quick and uses the momentum to isolate and arm and work for an armbar. Nieves was slower to start this round and just when it seemed Peace was not willing to mount an offense he explodes with a great head kick and flurry of punches that gets Nieves into trouble. Serious blows are exchanged between the two for the remainder of the round. Peace brings some solid punches and the occasional head kick that keeps Nieves guessing. Nieves’s speed is still a factor and he manages to land good jabs and leg kicks.

The third round had the fighters exchanging serious blows with Peace edging out the action with a tactical knee strike to the liver. Peace’s corner erupted with shouts for more knees to the area but Nieves was able to protect himself at the cost of his offense. Peace certainly dominated the round.

Body shots. It was all about body shots in round 4. Nieves responded in kind and targeted Peace’s liver. With precise strikes Nieves downed Peace 3 different times with shots to the body. Nieves prevails and takes the Bangkok Boxing middleweight Muay Thai belt.

Anthony Nieves wins by TKO in the 4th round.

That’s it for us, thanks to all the fighters for putting on a great show and to Khunpon / Bangkok Boxing for making it all happen.

Arlovski Speaks Frankly about Rogers Fight

June 10th, 2009 oscar No comments

Arlovski

This is the most sincere self-analysis I’ve ever seen a fighter undertake.

http://www.arlovski.com/

“I’m embarrassed.”

“I have to change something.”

“McCarthy saved me… or something.”

Andrei took a tough loss against Brett “The Grimm” Rogers last saturday at the Strikeforce event. He was KO’d in 22 seconds, almost 1/8th of the time he lasted against Fedor. We hope Andrei takes a some time and comes back to realize his former glory. ‘Cause you know it’s always badass when a fighter has vampire fangs.
