Interview with Soco McAllister, promoter of Sin City Fight Club / Sportfight X

March 24th, 2010 Jeremy No comments

Taking time out of his ridiculously busy schedule, we spoke with promoter Soco McAllister. This guy is a true fan of MMA and is continuing to bring great fights to the Atlanta area.

NextMMAFighter : Thanks for taking the time out of your schedule to talk with us Soco. How are the final preparations coming together for Sportfight X’s “Beatdown in the Ballroom”?

SportfightX Soco : I am doing an interview at 1:40 AM, but there ain’t no rest for the wicked, right? We are exceeding all expectations brother. Honestly every minute that goes by, I get a little more excited because tickets sales are great and as long as everything goes well at the weigh ins I think we are going to have an amazing show. This is a show with genuine interest built around it.

NextMMAFighter : Tell us a bit about the fighters you have in the cage on Friday Night.

SportfightX Soco : 90% of the fighters on the card have been the main event at other regional shows. I think that alone speaks volumes. I don’t even know where to begin, Diego Saraiva UFC veteran in the co-main event against an up and coming stand out DJ Fuentes from Matt Hughes camp. Warren Thompson, honestly the only way you’re not a fan of Warren is if you’ve never seen him fight. The guy is amazing on his feet yet somehow wins more fights by submission, just one of those mysteries. Byron Bloodworth, another main event guy, talented in any direction the fight goes. Frank Millsap, last three fights of his he’s been the main event, excellent wrestler who loves to stand. Card is just loaded with talent from top to bottom.
All of us are looking forward to the Redline Grand Prix finals.

NextMMAFighter : For anyone who hasn’t been following along, tell us about the $10,000 Redline VPX Grand Prix.

SportfightX Soco : This is the most anticipated cage fighting tournament in Georgia history, you’re not the only one who’s ready for this show to happen. We hand picked eight of the toughest unsigned fighters from around the country and put them in a cage to find the best. We put up a 10,000 dollar grand prize courtesy of REDLINE VPX and said may the best man win. Well we’ve seen some amazing fights from it and these final two guys are one fight away from the big show. Douglas Lima is 22 years old and has 14 victories under his belt, his first fight he needed a permission slip from his mother at the age of 17. He is an example athlete.

Cortez Coleman is from Matt Hughes camp in St. Louis and he is an example of struggle. He comes from a very rough background and honestly he was a last minute filler for this tournament. From the beginning, we didn’t think much of him. Turns out that’s kind of the way the world has treated him since birth and he is a fighter. Coming out here against all the odds and in a city where no one cheered for him, he persevered and he is here in the finals. Check out his video at sportfightx.com and see his training routine. It’s intense.

NextMMAFighter : Aside from the stellar pros you have on the card for Friday night, who are some up and coming amateur fighters you think have a bright future.

SportfightX Soco : We don’t have many amateur fights on the card but one that stands out is Hamza Utelib vs Jeremy Wallace. Hamza is about as dynamic as they come and he is an entertainer. Wallace is a piece of iron who is brutally strong and just loves to fight. They are both solid athletes already and I think that’s going to be a fun one to start the show with.

NextMMAFighter : As one of the premier promoters in the Southeast, what got you into the fight game?

SportfightX Soco : I came from a marketing background and spent years in that industry. I have never missed a UFC since the first one and have always been passionate about this sport. I had always dreamed of being involved with the UFC in some way. A few years back I sold out of my marketing businesses and decided to go where my heart was, and pushed myself into the game. I knew this region had some decent MMA shows but nothing for Atlanta to really call it’s home show. We are building that, by creating outstanding relationships with great companies that are interested in the growth of MMA as a sport and those relationships are going to take our events to the next level.

NextMMAFighter : What separates what you are doing from the rest of the shows of the region?

SportfightX Soco : We are doing things that others aren’t. Our image attracts the right type of people, the right caliber of fighter and a bigger group of sponsors. This isn’t Crazy Bob’s Fight Night, we are building a professional sports organization that the entire family can enjoy and everyone will appreciate that as we grow.
It’s funny the bigger you grow, the more critics you seem to find. Someone said today I should look at things in the fighters perspective, I found it funny as I thought of other shows in the region. Has anyone in Georgia history ever given away 10k in a tournament? Why would they? They could keep that money for themselves. I sometimes wonder if I think too much in the fighter’s perspective. Who knows.

NextMMAFighter : What advice do you have for fighters who are trying to take things to the next level in their careers?

SportfightX Soco : Sacrifices have to be made at some point. You have to find a great team to train with. Period. There are plenty of them, you just have to investigate. I just did a blog on this at www.sportfightx.com. If you have a great team to train with I recommend getting a good management team. A good manager can get your name out, build your web presence, make you look your full potential even if you aren’t there yet. They can help you find sponsors and be the bad guy when you don’t know how (pushing for more money). The best managers are the ones that are always selling their fighters not ones who never return phone calls. They make life easy on you because they are workers and represent your best interest. The team at Sponsoredfan.com and SuckerPunchEnt.com are two that I get daily messages from selling their fighters to me and it’s no coincidence they are 70% of my card this Friday.

NextMMAFighter : As MMA is becoming very popular in the US, grassroots shows are definitely on the rise. Do you think this trend will continue?

SportfightX Soco : Sure. But this is a very, very tough game. I am happy that the Athletic Commission is stepping in to keep the events safe and police things because there are plenty of people looking to jump on and just make a quick buck. Sometimes this happens at the cost of safety and integrity of the sport itself. In my short amount of time, I’ve seen many people try and fail and lose lots of money chasing that quick buck. My advice for those interested in getting involved is finding someone with experience in promoting to guide you, or hire them to consult or to even put the entire show together. I am currently working with companies in other areas put on shows. It will save you the time, the stress and money you could otherwise lose very quickly.

NextMMAFighter : In regards to the Southeast where you do most of your promoting, what’s your assessment on the growth of MMA in this part of the country.

SportfightX Soco : MMA is growing fast everywhere, this region is no different. A new fight gym opens up every month and I see 13 year olds doing amazing things in BJJ tournaments like Lutador Grappling. And the women are getting better and better so there is an evolution in progress at all times. What we are working on is continuing the education of the average fan and giving them the drug of knowledge to hook them on the sport the way we are. They become junkies like me and you, get addicted and someone has to provide their fix, and our fix is the purest.

NextMMAFighter : After what will surely be an amazing show on Friday night, can you tell us about any plans you have for big fights in the next few months?

SportfightX Soco : Yeah man, we are definitely looking at doing another tournament. Bigger and better than this one. We will be bringing championships into the mix. And some super fights. And partnering our show with other big promotions and events to expand the awareness of the sport to other genre’s. We are not going to rely on the die hard fan alone, and let UFC do all the marketing and educating for our sport. We all know they are the kings, but I feel I have a responsibility of holding my own in the growth of the sport, not just tapping into the already existing fans which I very much appreciate and work hard to keep them involved. We also have our amateur series Sin City Fight Club getting back into the mix of things where we are going to be traveling to other regions.

NextMMAFighter : It’s going to be a great fight on Friday and we can’t wait, in closing is there anything else you would like to say to the fans?

SportfightX Soco : We appreciate your support and welcome your feedback at every opportunity. We are not perfect and can’t satisfy everyone, but we grow, become better with every show and with your input will continue to do so. Check out my blog at www.sportfightx.com where I am journaling my experiences as a fight promoter. Also follow me on twitter @SportFightXSoco for latest updates, I like to do contests and fun stuff on there for free tickets to our events and tell insider secrets that I probably shouldn’t. And if you can’t make it to the fight Friday, you can watch it on gofightlive.tv. Or catch the highlights on HDNET’S Inside MMA next Friday. Two guys, One cage, Ten Thousand Dollars…. Sparks are going to fly!

Redline Grand Prix in Atlanta, GA postponed till March due to Lima hand injury

Douglas Lima

Sad news coming to us from Sin City Fight Club. The much anticipated conclusion to the Redline Grand Prix will be put on hold for a few months so that Lima can heal up and come in 100%. This news comes to us from our friend William “Soco” McAlister at Sin City Fight Club.

Atlanta, GA- Dubbed the most Anticipated Cage Fighting Tournament in Georgia history, The REDLINE Grand Prix put eight of the regions toughest middleweights in a cage to face off in a single elimination competition for a 10,000 dollar grand prize. The finals which were set to happen in January between Cortez Coleman a student of Matt Hughes and Robbie Lawlor’s Hit Squad in St. Louis Missouri and home town favorite Douglas “The Phenom” Lima from American Top Team Atlanta, will be postponed until March 2009.

Lima suffered injury during a three round war with Clint Hester en route to a decision victory in the semi finals of the tournament on November 13 at Center Stage. After X rays proved his right hand had a fracture in the bone leading to his index finger, Lima underwent surgery and will be unable to train for weeks.

“We had a tough decision to make, the contract states that if a contestant cannot continue, we have the right to replace the contestant with his previous opponent or a one suitable. After weighing out our options we have decided it would be best to put of the Finals to March and continue with our preciously scheduled card.” Stated Sin City Fight Club owner William “Soco” McAlister. “We started this tournament to find the best, and although the other contestants fought their hearts out, it would damage the credibility of the whole thing, and leave us all saying ‘What if ’.”

Cortez Coleman took the news of the postponement well, stating “ I have known Lima for a few years now, me and Hester would be a fun match up, but I really want to fight Lima and determine who really is the best. So if we have to wait, we have to wait.”

Lima obviously had positive things to say about the extension, “It sucks that this happened, but I’m just really glad Soco and Sin City Fight Club has given me this opportunity and didn’t replace me. I’m going to give this hand time to heal and go spend some time with American Top Team in Coconut Creek, FL. So I will hopefully turn it into a blessing and win this for all the fans here in the ATL.”

Sin City Fight Club has also announced it has partnered with SportFight X (a new promotion based out of Atlanta poised to become Atlanta’s first all pro MMA organization) for its upcoming January 16 card. Stay tuned for details.

Featured Fighter Interview – Clint Hester

November 12th, 2009 Nextmmafighter No comments

Clint Hester

Clint Hester is an absolutely electric fighter that I have had the pleasure to watch fight in person twice. He brings some serious standup to the cage and is currently undefeated in his MMA Career. He will look to get one step closer to winning the Redline Grand Prix when he steps into the cage on Friday night at Sin City Fight Night. We got a chance to speak with him as he makes his final preparations for his big fight.

NextMMAFighter : Thanks for taking the time to talk with us Clint. It’s only a few days until your fight now, what are your last minute preparations and or superstitions you follow for a big fight.

Clint Hester : I just relax and think about different ways the fight can go and how I will react to each situation.

NextMMAFighter : Your opponent is Douglas Lima, who you have had a chance to watch fight quite often because he is also a Atlanta area fighter. How do you think this helps you gameplan for this bout?

Clint Hester : Well, he has been at 170, so I had no clue that I would ever get a chance to fight him. But I have seen him fight a couple times and he has a lot of talent.

NextMMAFighter : You are competing in the Redline Grand Prix which is a tournament that will result in a $10,000 grand prize. Do you use the grand prize as motivation for the fight or is it just another day at the office for you?

Clint Hester : This is my career, so I am fighting for the money. But it’s what I love to do, so I would not trade my career in for any other in the world.

NextMMAFighter : In the first round you defeated Aaron “Tex” Johnson who is a great fighter and a guy you know as we could see when you squared up before your last fight. Is it difficult to fight someone that you consider as a friend and or former training partner?

Clint Hester : Man, when you step in the cage and it has to do with my future. I’m always coming hard, whoever the opponent, we can go party together afterwards.

NextMMAFighter : As an undefeated fighter you have yet to taste defeat. Many veteran fighters say there’s alot to gain from a loss. Do you believe this to be true?

Clint Hester : It is very true that you learn more from a loss than you do from a win. I know what it feels like to lose in combat sports, so that has helped me with my MMA career.

NextMMAFighter : As a professional fighter who fights out of X3 where you are also an instructor, how does it help you as a fighter to teach others.

Clint Hester : When you’re teaching others you get a much better understanding of why you make the moves you make. Anyone can learn how to throw a simple jab-cross but you have to know why you throw the jab-cross to be a great fighter

NextMMAFighter : In Mixed Martial Arts, having the tools of many fighting styles at your disposal is important. What parts of your game are you looking to get better at to become a more complete fighter.

Clint Hester : I need to improve on all of my game, some parts more than others, but I have a lot of room to grow. From my ground to my stand up, I have a lot of experience to gain.

NextMMAFighter : Who are some of your favorite fighters, past or present and why?

Clint Hester : I love watching Urijah Faber and Floyd Mayweather because they train hard, are smart fighters, and, no matter who they fight, they train like it’s their last fight.

NextMMAFighter : What are some of your favorite things to do outside of the ring when you aren’t training?

Clint Hester : I love music. I work with with a group of artists who are up and coming in the music game. I also love teaching the kids in my sports training classes and youth boxing classes at X3 Sports.

NextMMAFighter : We wish you the best of luck on Friday night and know you will be well supported by X3. In closing, is there anyone else you would like to thank?

Clint Hester : I want to thank X3 Sports, Tony Tucci, Ranieri Paiva, Mike Littrel, Megan Swartzlander, all of my training partners who have pushed and helped me to get ready. I couldn’t do this without all of the people who support me in whatever I do.

Best of luck on Friday Clint, it’s going to be a great fight! For tickets to see Clint fight on Friday night in Atlanta, you can get them here. http://www.sincityfightclub.com/tickets.html

Sin City Fight Club in Atlanta, GA | 10-10-09

October 9th, 2009 Jeremy 1 comment

Sin City Fight Club is one of the premier promotions that has settled into the Southeast. This Saturday night they will be putting on a the first bouts of a tournament-style card that will continue over the next few months. The series promises to answer the question of “Just who is the baddest cage fighter in the Southeast?”

This tournament will feature many previously covered fighters from our blog, including Sponsored Fan fighter Tex Johnson.

NextMMAFighter will be covering the fight live and hosting photographs from the event later that evening. Here is the official press release from Sin City Fight Club Productions.

ATLANTA, GA September 22, 2009- William “Soco” McAlister, of Roswell, Georgia, may very well become Atlanta’s best -know sports promoter by the end of only his first year of producing fights in the city. His company SIN CITY FIGHT CLUB (SCFC) is the premiere Mixed Martial Arts event production and coordinating company in the Southeast. SCFC fights blend a sexually charged, high energy Vegas style atmosphere with Extreme Cage Fighting Events.

McAlister, a Florida native, sold out his first fight at Atlanta’s Center Stage in midtown this past May. Looking forward, Sin City looks likely to repeat their success with their forthcoming Redline Grand Prix Round 1 competition being held at Center Stage on October 10th., 2009.
Redline is sponsoring the series of three contents produced by Sin City over the next few months. The series promises to answer the question of just, “Who is the baddest Cage Fighter in the Southeast?”

The tournament is Georgia’s first Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) series to reward the winner with over $12,000 dollars in total cash. The competition will pit eight of the Southeast’s toughest 185 pound cage fighters in a three bout, single- elimination tournament to determine who can claim they are the undisputed best of the region. Each bout will consist of three 3 minute rounds. The second bout of the tournament will be held on Friday, the 13th in November. The third and deciding bout date will be in January of 2010.

The talent selected to compete in the Redline Grand Prix tournament are a hand picked group of diverse individuals who share a history of winning, a hunger for a higher level of competition, and a desire to be labeled among the best of southeast rapidly growing professional MMA athletes.

Fighters included entered in the Redline Grand Prix include Aaron “Tex” Johnson, George Allen, Douglas Lima, Clint Hester, Scott Harper, John Troyer, Eddie Hernandez and Cortez Colemen. Also on the undercard are local favorites, Eddie Walker, Elliot Teimann and Stephen Upchurch, Jeremy Wallace and Sid Bargo.

Aaron “Tex” Johnson, the local “bad boy” of MMA, is a former football player and holds a black belt in Tae Kwon DO. Johnson has finished his last three fights in less than a minute and a half–combined!

Johnson is excited to fight under McAlister stating, “Soco’s production level’s quality is rivaled only by the U.F.C.”

Johnson is pleased that Sin City, “Goes the extra mile when it comes to making the sport’s fans participate in his programs. Sin City hosts pre and post fight events where fans are allowed to meet the fighters and party with winners,” says Johnson.

Another fan favorite participating again in Sin City’s next fight is Clint “Headbuster” Hester. Hester, who once participated in unsanctioned illegal underground fights, says “Soco is by far the most legitimate promoter of the sport I have worked with to date.” He (Soco) cares about his fighters and really loves the sport.
His fights provide a energy charged Vegas-style fight atmosphere previously unavailable for the sports fans in Georgia,” says Hester.
